Circle is looking for a worship leader who is excited about using his or her gifts for the good of the church. He or she should bring theological depth, a focus on grace, and musical skill to lead us in worshiping the Lord and rehearsing the gospel each Sunday.The worship leader should incorporate and introduce historic elements of Christian worship and select theologically rich songs and hymns.

Basic Description

The worship leader plans and leads Sundaymorning worship services in consultation with the senior pastor and in communication with the ministry assistant. He or she schedules volunteers and leads worship rehearsals.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The worship leader must:

  1. Be a vocalist and instrumentalist (preferably a guitarist or keyboardist);
  2. Be able to lead worship alone and as part of a group;
  3. Have or be obtaining formal theological training; and,
  4. Work well with other musicians of various levels of skill and experience.


The worship leader must know the Lord, be committed to ongoing spiritual growth, and agree with Circle’s statement of faith (available at A bachelor’s degree and three years of related experience are desirable. Experience with Planning Center and MediaShout are desirable.



  1. Plan, organize, and lead the Sunday morning gatherings by creating an order of worship in consultation with the senior pastor.
  2. Select songs which:
    • reflect the full character of God;
    • include contemporary songs and hymns from a variety of songwriters and church backgrounds;
    • capture the elements of praise, reflection, celebration, confession, and joy.
  3. Implement other biblical elements of worship, including:
    • corporate prayer;
    • Scripture and responsive readings;
    • calls to worship;
    • confession;
    • assurance;
    • recitation of Christian creeds;
    • benedictions.
  4. Plan special services for Good Friday,Easter, Christmas Eve, and Christmas;
  5. Recruit, train, and manage worship team members, including the assimilation of new worship leaders and musicians.
  6. Coordinate with the Sunday morning tech team (slides, sound, recording).

Other Expectations

The worship leader should:

  • Prioritize the study of God’s Word and prayer.
  • Seek out training, books, and classes to help him or her obtain professional and ministry goals.
    (Consult with the pastor regarding timing, frequency, and cost.)
  • Be disciplined with his or her time, while maintaining a balance between home and work. Family should not be sacrificed for the sake of ministry.
  • Be kind, but frank. The pastor values an open environment where it is safe to communicate uncomfortable truths.
  • Submit to an annual evaluation, based on this description and on his or her annual goals.

Other Information

The worship leader position is considered an employee (subject to FICA) not a minister (subject to SECA). The church will pay half of the worship leader’s social security and Medicare tax; the other half will be withheld from each paycheck.
